Djihane BenmaghsoulaHer
Born in Constantine in 1972 and trained as a veterinary doctor, Djihane Benmaghsoula took up photography in 2008 with a compact camera. She photographs what no one looks at anymore: the doors and windows of old neighbourhoods, the very small, faces, and the streets when they start to move.
Approach
I stop in front of what others pass by. A door nobody opens anymore, a cracking wall, a creature one centimetre long, a face in a crowd. I work mostly in black and white, because colour tells you the era and I am looking for what remains once the era has gone. Constantine is my city and my school: a city suspended over a gorge, held up by its bridges, and in need of defending.
